Overview over our technical paper on

"Temperature Controlled Rolling of Wire Rod and Bar"

The precise control of wire-rod- and bar-rolling temperatures is vital in satisfying ever increasing demands for i. improved and more consistent mechanical and metallurgical properties and ii. increased mill speeds.  Furthermore, in addition to increased strength and toughness characteristics, an improved product microstructure is desirable in such that subsequent heat treating and double handling can be eliminated.  These demands can only be satisfied by ”temperature-controlled rolling” via interstand and post-finishing water-cooling systems, where specific target temperatures are set and maintained during the complete rod- and bar-production process.

The article describes the development and operation of the patented and highly efficient ThermoQuench® Cooling nozzles used in interstand and post-finishing cooling trains.  A review of basic cooling principles will reveal that under given operating conditions, effective product cooling is primarily a function of the cooling nozzle’s heat transfer coefficient.

Product-Overview

Growing requirements to the rolled products, especially with regard to dimension tolerances are requesting a control of the produced material. This control should be made, if possible, during the rolling process in order to react without any delay on deviations be appropriate measurements. A product of inferior or waste quality should be avoided.

The most effective instrument to take care of such problems is our  MONITORING ROLLER GUIDE (MRG).

The MONITORING ROLLER GUIDE (MRG), developed as an 'intelligent' roller guide, investigates the forces which work on the arms of the roller holding device using the patented built-in MRG Sensor. If e.g. the incoming section in the roller guide is changing because of wear in the rolling stands before, the force which pushes the rollers apart is increasing. If the rollers of the roller guide are damaged or in case the bearings are not correct there are considerable variations of power to be noticed.

The MONITORING ROLLER GUIDE, designed to be an integrated part of the mill, is the ideal device to guarantee a high-output production with first-class quality. Misalignment, twisting, underfilling and overfilling of the stock, as well as temperature deviation (cold end) are detected immediately and indicated on the computer screen so that the operator can take quick actions to avoid rejects.

For more detailed information about the MONITORING ROLLER GUIDE please refer to our US-Patent 4,790,164 or our EP-Patent 0 233 278 or follow this link to the MRG-page.

ThermoQuench® Cooling Nozzle

It had become evident that given the industry trends (increased speed, improved material specifications), an increasing number of cooling systems were being utilized at their design capacities.  The task of improving existing cooling technology had presented itself and prompted the development of the highly efficient turboQunech cooling nozzle.

For more detailed information about ThermoQuench® refer to our EP-Patent No. 0 144 029, US-Patent No. 4,629,165, Japan-Patent No. 1 594 421 or follow this link to the ThermoQuench®-page.
